For the past ten years, Matt Erickson has been the firm’s senior in-house writer and strategist.
In this capacity, he has helped elect candidates including U.S. Senators Ben Cardin, Debbie Stabenow, and Jon Tester; provided major strategic and message advice for progressive organizations including the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, The Human Rights Campaign, and the National Education Association; and helped pass major progressive ballot initiatives including Florida’s historic 71% vote in favor of prohibiting smoking in restaurants. If a campaign representative speaks, writes, mails, e-mails, or faxes a sentence to an audience, chances are that Matt has improved on it in the process.
While he prefers to win victories instead of awards, Matt will note that he’s scripted many of the advertisements recognized by the American Association of Political Consultants, including 2006’s best individual ad (“Creating a Buzz”) and best overall campaign for Tester, and 2002’s best independent expenditure ad (“Hard to Swallow”) for the League of Conservation Voters.
Matt comes to LKK by way of a career in campaign fundraising, helping re-elect Senators Carl Levin, Barbara Mikulski, and Paul Sarbanes, and serving (at the tender age of 21) in the vaunted New Jersey fundraising operation of the 1992 Clinton for President campaign. He has a B.A. in Religion from the College of William and Mary; under duress he will acknowledge that he was Phi Beta Kappa.
